If you have the left side cover off, and can see the starter driven gear,which is the big one, you should be able to check the clutch.
The book says to remove the idler gears and their shafts, from the crankcase. There is a NOTE
that states the starter gear may come off with the alternator rotor when removing the cover. From the illustration, it looks like the clutch is held on the driven gear by a bracket with six Allen bolts. If possible you really need to get a Clymer manual. I got mine at a Suzuki dealer. Good luck.
